I have bought a lot of gifts for one fairly patient man and kept track of what actually got used afterwards, which is the only measure that means anything.
The pattern is consistent and slightly annoying: the expensive thing gets admired and the cheap thing gets worn to death.
The rule that works
Buy the better version of something he already uses daily, not a new category of thing. An upgraded version of the t-shirt he wears constantly beats an introduction to a hobby he has not asked for.
This sounds unimaginative. It is also the reason the cheapest item on this list is the one he actually wears.
The splurge, defended
One good jacket is worth doing once. It is the piece that gets worn over everything else and photographed at every event, and it lasts long enough that cost per wear stops being an argument.
Buy it in a colour he already owns things in. A beautiful jacket that does not go with his actual wardrobe hangs up.
What not to buy
Anything requiring him to start a habit. Equipment for a hobby he has mentioned once is a gift for the person you hoped he would become.
Fragrance, unless he has told you which one. This is a very personal purchase and a wrong guess sits unused on a shelf for years.
Anything that needs sizing you are unsure of. Get the size from something in his wardrobe before you buy, not after.
