Phuket is genuinely easy for plant-based eating, partly because there is a real scene for it and partly because Thai food accommodates it better than almost any cuisine.

This guide is scaffolded on the places I want to name properly — tell me which ones and I will fill them in. The practical part below stands on its own.

The all-day place with the bowls

The one I went back to most. Breakfast through dinner, no gap.

The format that works best on a beach holiday — open all day, so lunch at four is not a problem, and substantial enough to be dinner.

The one that delivers to your villa

The night nobody wants to get in a car.

On the third night of any villa stay nobody wants to leave. Having one good plant-based place that delivers properly is worth more than two better restaurants that do not.

How to eat plant-based at ordinary Thai restaurants

The word is "jay" — strictly vegetarian, no animal products, no pungent vegetables. It is widely understood and shops displaying a yellow and red jay sign are entirely plant-based.

Fish sauce and oyster sauce are the two things to ask about explicitly, because both are used as background seasoning in dishes that otherwise contain no meat. "Mai sai nam pla" — no fish sauce — is the other phrase worth learning.

Curry pastes frequently contain shrimp paste. Green curry at a tourist restaurant is usually made without it; at a local place, ask.

What to skip

Anywhere marketing itself primarily as a wellness concept with a Western price and small portions. Phuket has genuinely good plant-based food at local prices and there is no reason to pay resort rates for a bowl.

Questions
Is it easy to eat vegan in Phuket?

Yes. There is a real plant-based scene, and Thai food accommodates it well — learn the word "jay", which means strictly vegetarian and is understood everywhere.

What should you watch out for as a vegan in Thailand?

Fish sauce and oyster sauce as background seasoning, and shrimp paste in curry pastes. Ask explicitly; "mai sai nam pla" means no fish sauce.

What does a "jay" sign mean?

A yellow and red jay sign marks food that is strictly vegetarian with no animal products — the simplest way to eat plant-based anywhere in Thailand.
