I furnished this apartment over about five months, kept every receipt, and have a clear view now of where the money was worth spending and where it was not.
The rule that came out of it: buy the frame once — sofa, bed, table, rug — and treat everything soft as seasonal and replaceable.
What to spend on
The sofa. A hardwood frame and real upholstery outlives three cheap sofas and costs less than all three. It is also the thing you touch most and notice most.
The bed and the mattress. A third of your life, and the only purchase where I would go over budget without hesitating.
The rug. A good wool rug survives moves, cleans up and anchors a room; a cheap one looks cheap within a year and there is nowhere to hide it.
What to buy cheap
Cushions, throws, linens, candles, vases. This is where a room gets a season without getting a renovation, and where spending more buys you almost nothing.
Lighting fixtures, within reason. A rattan pendant shade swapped in ten minutes changes a room more than most furniture and costs sixty dollars.
The three I would skip
A second occasional chair nobody sits in. Every room I have furnished has had one and I have never once used it.
A coffee table with no storage in a small room. It looks better in a photograph and it is a worse object to live with.
Matching anything as a set. The rooms I like are the ones where the dining chairs and the table came from different places.
