Book the lawn, not the pool — and other things I learned renting here.

I have rented here enough times now to know what to filter for, and it is not the things the listings lead with.
A house with a lawn, not just a pool
Everyone photographs the pool and everyone spends the day on the grass.
Filter for outdoor space beyond the deck. A lawn absorbs children, a ball, a dog and four people who do not want to swim, and it is the difference between a house that works for a group and one that does not.
The one with a covered pergola
Shade you can eat lunch under is worth more than a second bathroom.
The desert sun makes an uncovered outdoor table unusable from about eleven to four. A pergola or a deep overhang gives you the long slow lunch that is the reason to rent a house at all.
The one with a real kitchen
You will cook exactly once. Make sure that once is possible.
A single proper meal at the house and everything else out is the right rhythm. That needs an oven, counter space and enough plates — which a surprising number of listings do not have for eight.
The quiet one, further out
Ten minutes further, half the price, and no one walking past the fence.
The houses in the centre cost a premium for a walkability nobody uses — you will drive anyway. Further out you get more space, more privacy and a better pool for the money.
Outdoor shade, a lawn, and the number of actual bedrooms rather than the number of people it "sleeps" — a sofa bed in the living room is not a bedroom when there are eight of you.
Air conditioning that covers the whole house, not just the main room. Ask directly if the listing is vague; in the desert this is not a small thing.
For four or more people, a house wins on price and wins by more the longer you stay. For two, a hotel is usually better value once cleaning fees are in.
Watch the cleaning fee on short stays — on a two-night booking it can be a quarter of the total.
July and August. It is not a joke about the heat — it is well over a hundred degrees and the pool is the temperature of a bath. October to May is the season and the prices say so.
For four or more people, yes, and by more the longer you stay. For two it usually is not, once the cleaning fee is counted.
A lawn, covered outdoor shade, a real kitchen, and air conditioning throughout. The pool is a given; the rest is not.
