Twelve books, one sandbank, no phone signal. The ranking here is not literary — it is entirely about which books survived being read in twenty-minute pieces between swims.

The winner was finished in two afternoons. The ones I abandoned were not bad books; they were books that needed a desk.

What makes a good lounger book

Short chapters. A book you can leave and come back to fifteen minutes later without rereading a page is worth two better books that you cannot.

Paperback, not hardback, and not a screen. Sun on an e-reader is a losing fight and sand gets into a hardback spine in a way it never leaves.

The ferry test

Two hours on a boat with nothing else to do is the only truly uninterrupted reading of a trip. If a book is going to get you, it gets you on the ferry.

What I stopped packing

Anything I felt I ought to read. Four years of carrying an improving book to an island and carrying it home unopened was enough evidence.

And more than three books. There is always a bookshop, and the one you buy there is usually better than the ones you chose in advance.
