A spa treatment is about an hour. A spa day is about six, and the difference between them is almost entirely how early you arrive.

These are the ones worth travelling for, and the way to use them that took me embarrassingly long to work out.

The thermal circuit with the glass-block wall

Hot, cold, repeat, for as long as you like. The treatment is almost incidental.

A proper circuit — warm pool, cold plunge, steam, rest — where the facilities are the product rather than an add-on to a massage. Book the earliest slot and have it to yourself for an hour.

The sky pool above the city

The part of the spa day everyone rushes and shouldn’t.

Most people have the treatment and leave. The hour afterwards, horizontal, somewhere with a view, is the part that actually does something.

The hotel spa with the printed menu

Traditional massage done properly, at a price that still surprises me.

The value of a serious hotel spa in Southeast Asia against the European equivalent is not a small gap; it is several times. Book two treatments on separate days rather than one long one.

How to use a spa day

Arrive two hours before the treatment, not fifteen minutes. The circuit before a massage changes what the massage can do, and nobody tells you this when you book.

Stay for an hour afterwards. Leaving immediately undoes most of it, and the lounger is usually free.

What to book and what to skip

Book the longest version of the simplest treatment. A ninety-minute massage beats a sixty-minute massage with three add-ons, every time.

Skip anything described as a ritual with more than four steps. You are paying for the choreography.

Never on a flight day

A deep massage and then six hours in a seat is a bad trade. Book the spa for the day you arrive rather than the day you leave.

Questions
How early should you arrive at a spa?

Two hours before the treatment. Using the thermal circuit first changes what the massage can do, and nobody tells you when you book.

What treatment should you book at a spa?

The longest version of the simplest thing. A ninety-minute massage beats sixty minutes with three add-ons.

Should you book a spa before a flight?

No. A deep massage followed by six hours in a seat undoes it. Book it for the day you arrive instead.
