This is the first Traveling Shelf. The idea is simple: wherever I am, I photograph the skin and beauty cabinet exactly as it is, and then go through what is in it. Nothing gets moved for the photo and nothing gets added for the article.

September is a working shelf rather than a pretty one — a vitamin C in the morning, an acid and a retinol on alternate nights, a lip mask on top of everything, and the cream that has been bought more times than anything else on this site.

C E Ferulic

This is the formula the vitamin C category copies: 15% pure L-ascorbic acid stabilised with vitamin E and ferulic acid, in a water-light serum that goes on before moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning. It smells faintly of hot dogs, it is not cheap, and the amber bottle is the tell that it is the real, oxidisable thing rather than a derivative. Use it within a few months of opening — once it turns dark orange it has stopped working.

Why I love it
15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid — the published formula, at the published strength.

Paula’s Choice

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

A leave-on liquid exfoliant with 2% salicylic acid, which is oil-soluble and so gets into pores rather than only working on the surface. No fragrance, no alcohol sting, a slightly slippery texture that disappears in a minute. Two or three nights a week is enough for most skin; nightly use is where people overdo it. The 30ml is the size worth owning first — it lasts weeks and fits any liquids bag.

Leave-on 2% salicylic acid in a watery, fragrance-free base that does not sting.

Lip Sleeping Mask, Vanilla

A dense balm you put on at night and forget about. It is built on shea butter and coconut oil with a hyaluronic and vitamin C “berry complex”, and the point is the texture: thick enough to stay on for hours rather than slide off in ten minutes like a normal balm. The vanilla version smells like frosting. One 20g pot lasts months, and the little spatula in the lid is the reason the jar stays clean.

Why I love it
A thick berry-and-vanilla balm with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C that stays put through the night.

Shani Darden

Retinol Reform

A retinol that is easier to live with than most. The retinol is encapsulated, which slows its release, and it is paired with lactic acid and a lightweight, milky base, so the result is smoother skin over a few weeks rather than a fortnight of peeling first. It goes on at night, alone or under a cream, and the pump makes it easy to use the pea-sized amount that is actually the correct dose. Not for the same night as an acid or vitamin C.

Why I love it
Encapsulated retinol paired with lactic acid, so it works on texture without the flaking a plain retinol gives.

The Rich Cream

The price is the whole argument against it and the texture is the whole argument for it. It is genuinely thick without ever going greasy, which almost nothing at this weight manages, and it is the one cream that makes skin look like it slept eight hours when it slept four. Whether that is worth the money is a question only the jar can answer for you.

Works under makeup, works over retinol, works at 30,000 feet.
