I have worn this skirt more than any other single item I own, including jeans, which surprised me when I counted.
The reason is that a print on the bottom half asks almost nothing of the top half. Here is what that looks like five times.
The default and the one I have worn most. A plain white t-shirt tucked at the front only, and the flattest sandals in the house. It reads considered and takes forty seconds.
Same skirt, silk camisole, gold at the ears and nothing else. The print does the work so the rest of the outfit can be almost nothing.
A heavy jacket over a print skirt is the combination I resisted for years and now wear constantly. Boots, opaque tights, done.
The most-used version on an island. A swimsuit as the top half, the skirt over it, and the whole thing goes from beach to lunch without a change.
The one that works for anything with a dress code. An oversized white shirt, half-tucked, flat shoes, and no jewellery at all.
Keep the top half plain. A white tee, a black camisole or an oversized shirt — the print does not need help and will fight anything else with a pattern.
It has been in style for about seventy years, which is longer than most things people call classics. I would not buy it for a season.
