I ate mango sticky rice more or less constantly for four months and I have become tiresome about it.

The short version: it is a seasonal dish, the season is roughly March to June, and out of season it is a different and sadder plate. The rest of this is where to go and how to tell.

The best one I had came off a cart and cost about a dollar.

The queue rule holds here as everywhere in Bangkok: if there is a line of people in work clothes, join it. Carts sell out by early evening in season, which is itself the recommendation.

Worth going once. The queue is long and the rice is genuinely very good.

Go early or go at an odd hour. It is the most consistent version in the city and the only one I would send someone to without checking the season first.

Cheapest, most variable, and where I ate it most often.

Quality swings by stall and by day. Buy the mango and the rice from whoever has the ripest fruit on display — the rice is rarely the problem.

Best for: Eating it four times a week
When to go: Morning, when the fruit is freshest

When mango season actually is

Roughly March to June, peaking in April and May. Outside that window it is sold everywhere and made with fruit that has travelled, and it is not the same dish.

A vendor who tells you it is the same year-round is selling you the year-round version.

How to tell a good one

The coconut cream goes over at the moment of serving, never before. If it arrives pre-poured and pooling, the rice has been sitting.

The mango should be soft enough to give under a spoon and fragrant from a foot away. The rice should be warm, not chilled — a cold sticky rice is a leftover.

Salt. A good one is faintly salty against the sweet, usually from a pinch in the coconut cream and sometimes from toasted mung beans on top.

What it should cost

From a cart or a market stall, somewhere around 60–100 baht in season. The famous shop is several times that and is still not expensive.

Anything charging restaurant prices for it is charging you for the chairs.
