Lisbon has become one of the standard stops for anyone working from somewhere else for a while, and the honest version of that is harder to find than the listicles suggest.

A day pass on a day with calls is the best money spent on a working trip. Reliable upload speed and a door that closes are things no café can promise.

The neighbourhood to stay in

Walkable to a café you like, not to the tourist centre.

The thing that decides whether a working stay is good is the five-minute radius around where you sleep. Everything else you can travel to.

Best for: A stay of two weeks or more
When to go: Any time outside August

What I check before a working trip anywhere

Upload speed, not download. Video calls fail on upload, and the number quoted in a listing is almost always the download figure.

Power sockets and the shape of the chair. Two hours in a café chair designed for a coffee is two hours you will not repeat.

Time zone overlap with whoever you need to talk to. Lisbon is kind to European hours and workable for the US east coast in the afternoon.
