THE BESTFONDUEIN ZURICH

A pot of melted cheese, a chairlift, and the one thing on the table everybody ignores.

I spend most of the year somewhere warm, and the trip I look forward to most is the one where I cannot feel my hands.

Snowboarding, a town that goes dark at four, and dinner that is a pot of melted cheese on a table between us. There is nothing to do in the evening, which is the entire point.

The mountain

First lift, every day. The runs are empty for the first hour and you get about four of them before the rest of the mountain arrives, which is worth the alarm.

I am a mediocre snowboarder and I have stopped minding. Four good runs and a long lunch is a better day than eight runs and shredded legs.

The fondue argument

It is not a sophisticated meal and it is the best one of the trip. A pot of cheese, bread, pickles, and two hours where nobody is going anywhere.

Order the pickles. Every table gets them and everyone ignores them, and they are the thing that makes the second half of the pot possible.

The town after dark

Zurich in January is cold and blue and closes early. There is very little to do and that is the recommendation — it is the only trip I take where the evening has no agenda.

Questions
Is Switzerland worth it in winter?

It is the trip I look forward to most, and I am otherwise a warm-weather person. Empty first-lift runs and an evening with no agenda are the whole appeal.

What should you order at a fondue restaurant?

The pickles that come with it, which everyone ignores. They are what makes the second half of the pot possible.
