An open shala, a small group, and a teacher who adjusts rather than demonstrates. The heat makes an early class non-negotiable, which turns out to be the best thing about it.

Small, green, and nothing to do between classes, which is the point.
The kind of place where the afternoon gap is deliberate. No excursions, no schedule beyond two classes, and a plunge pool for the hours in between.
The hill retreat with the cold mornings
Altitude, linen sheets, and the best sleep of the trip.
Cold enough at night to need a blanket, which after months in the heat was the actual luxury. Ask for a corner room.
Class size. Six to twelve people means a teacher can adjust you; thirty means a demonstration. This single number predicts the experience better than the price.
Whether the schedule has gaps. A retreat that fills every hour is a holiday with yoga in it. The good ones leave the afternoon empty on purpose and it is uncomfortable for about two days.
Whether the teachers live there. Visiting teachers on a rotation are fine; a resident teacher who knows the room is better.
In Southeast Asia, a genuine small-group retreat with accommodation and food runs a fraction of the European equivalent, and the teaching is often better because the teachers stay longer.
Be suspicious of anything charging European prices in a cheap country without explaining what the money buys.
How many people in a class. Who is teaching, and are they there all week. Is food included and what happens if you do not eat what everyone else eats. Whether there is a refund window.
A place that answers all four clearly is usually a good place. A place that answers vaguely is telling you something.
