A birthday dinner in LA lives or dies on two things: whether you are outside, and how far anyone has to drive afterwards.
These are the rooms that have worked, and the booking rules that make them work.
The patio one
Heaters, string lights, and a table you can sit at for three hours.
LA does outdoor dining better than anywhere and a birthday is the night to use it. Ask for the patio explicitly at booking and again on arrival.
The one on the water
Book 45 minutes before sunset, not for sunset.
The light is the product. Being seated and having ordered before it starts is the difference between a great table and a rushed one.
The canyon room
No view, no scene, and the best food of the three.
For a birthday where the point is the dinner rather than the photograph. Quieter, easier to book, and you can hear each other.
Three weeks for anywhere with a patio in summer. Ask for outside in the reservation note, and confirm it the day before — patios get reassigned.
Tell them it is a birthday when you book. Same rule as everywhere: they can do something with notice and nothing on the night.
Worth thinking about before you choose. A restaurant everyone can get home from easily is a better birthday than a better restaurant forty minutes up a canyon road.
