My parents visit and I spend the first year of doing it wrong: too many things, too far apart, too much walking between them.

What works is one anchor a day, booked in advance, somewhere quiet enough to hear each other, with a taxi at both ends. Everything below is built around that.

The single highest-value booking of the trip. Somewhere unhurried, where a two-hour dinner is normal and nobody is waiting for the table.

Pick one high place and skip the rest.

Every parent wants the view and no parent wants three of them. Book a timed entry, go near sunset, and be somewhere with a chair afterwards.

A sit-down coffee and something absurd, halfway through the day.

The stop that makes the rest of the day possible. Not a queue, not a counter you eat standing at — somewhere with chairs.

Best for: The middle of the afternoon
When to go: Between lunch and whatever is booked at seven

An hour of not being in traffic.

A park, a garden, a walk along the water. It is the thing my parents mention afterwards and the thing I would never have planned on my own.

Best for: The morning of the second day
When to go: Early, before it fills up

The rules that made it work

One anchor a day, booked. Parents do not want to be asked where they would like to eat at six o’clock; they want to be told the table is at seven.

Taxis, not the subway, at least at night. The saving is small and the difference in how the evening ends is not.

Where to stay

Somewhere central enough that the hotel is a place to go back to mid-afternoon. A cheaper room forty minutes out costs you the nap that makes dinner enjoyable.
